Cantu brings strong recruiting ties to UTEP
New UTEP assistant coach Bob Cantu has an impressive track record and has established himself as one of the top recruiters in college basketball. His strong recruiting ties in the West Coast give hope that the Miners will bring in more quality prospects to the basketball program. The question is, how does Coach Cantu make UTEP an appealing place for top prospects?
"I think number one, you got to recruit bigger numbers, more people. You can't just focus on just one or two guys and you can't be afraid to reach out for the great one," said Coach Cantu. "I think the biggest thing here is selling Coach Floyd, and his background. Selling his experience in the NBA and how many guys he's put in the NBA."
Cantu had huge success in recruiting top prospects at USC. ESPN ranked the 2007 USC recruiting class #1 in the country and Cantu played an instrumental part in bringing in that talent.
"We've got to be able to identify and project talent and get in there early with kids when they're freshmen, sophomores and juniors and do a really good job when you get them on campus for visits," said Cantu who has been recruiting the West Coast for 17 years.
With the National Letter of Intent signing day around the corner in November and the season starting in October, Coach Cantu will be playing catch up but is ready to get started. "The phones are already ringing from coaches, high school and AU coaches, and prospects about their interest. I'm excited to get on the road and start chasing them down."
