IU has early lead in 2012 team rankings

On Monday it was all about the individual players that landed in the newly updated Rivals150 for the class of 2012. Now, it's time to take a look at which programs have done the best job of landing those star players at this early stage.

Of those players, only eight five-stars, and 42 of the overall Rivals150 for 2012 have offered up early commitments. So, that means that a lot will change over the next year and that any program with three, or even two ranked prospects in their group of committed players is doing well.

So far, nobody has done better than Tom Crean and the Indiana Hoosiers. Five-star Hanner Perea and jitterbug point guard Kevin Ferrell lead a group that includes lots of homegrown talent. Despite some lean years, Indiana basketball is growing again and groups like this are a big reason for renewed energy around Bloomington.

The No. 2 and No. 3 classes are also buoying their future by cleaning up on local talent. All three of Jay Wright's early commitments at Villanova -- including five-star Daniel Ochefu -- hail from the Philadelphia area. Over in East Lansing, Michigan State fans are extremely excited about homegrown products like big man Matt Costello and versatile wing Denzel Valentine.

Baylor only has one recruit at this point, but in landing Isaiah Austin, they have landed the best prospect in the country. His presence alone at this early juncture gives Baylor the fourth best class in the land. N.C. State picked up five-star shooting guard Torian Graham just a few days ago. His upside and the improved stock of point guard Tyler Lewis gives them the No. 5 spot for now.

North Carolina checks in at No. 6 while the top 10 is rounded out by Florida, Michigan, Purdue and Texas.

Not only does Indiana land at No. 1, the Big Ten overall is having a big year and place the most teams in the top 10 with four. The Big 12 lands two teams within the top 10 and interestingly enough they are the only two teams that make the list with just one recruit. The ACC has two more teams in the top 10 while the Big East and SEC each place one squad each in the early rankings.

2012 Team Rankings
1. Indiana
2012 commits (National rank)
PF Hanner Perea (15)
PG Kevin Ferrell (28)
SF Jeremy Hollowell (42)
SG Ron Patterson (115)
C Peter Jurkin
Indiana fans are ready for the recruiting success of Tom Crean to translate on the court, and this five-man class is expected to play a huge part in this potential turnaround. Every position is covered in this class with five-star prospect Hanner Perea as the highest ranked of the prospects.
2. Villanova
2012 commits (National rank)
C Daniel Ochefu (19)
PG Ryan Arcidiacono (53)
PF Savon Goodman (62)
Jay Wright and his staff continue to recruit at a high level. Ochefu, a five-star big man, is a force down low. Four-star prospects Arcidiacono and Goodman bring different skill sets to the court. Arcidiacono is a scoring combo guard, and Goodman is an athletic slasher and rebounder.
3. Michigan State
2012 commits (National rank)
PF Matt Costello (48)
PF Kenny Kaminski (60)
SF Denzel Valentine (85)
Tom Izzo has a trio of skilled forwards at his disposal in his 2012 recruiting class. Costello and Kaminski have size and great shooting strokes. Valentine is small forward with a versatile game.
4. Baylor
2012 commits (National rank)
PF Isaiah Austin (1)
At this point, Scott Drew's recruiting class is all about quality over quantity. The top prospect in the country, Isaiah Austin is a game-changing player on both ends of the court.
5. North Carolina State
2012 commits (National rank)
SG Torian Graham (25)
PG Tyler Lewis (86)
The future looks bright, at least in the backcourt, for new North Carolina State coach Mark Gottfried. Five-star shooting guard Torian Graham is a high level athlete with tons of potential. Lewis is the ultimate playmaking point guard who can both score and dish the rock.
6. North Carolina
2012 commits (National rank)
SF J.P. Tokoto (43)
PG Marcus Paige (51)
Just like neighbor North Carolina State, Roy Williams has secured a couple of talented backcourt prospects. Tokoto is a high-flying athlete who thrives in an open court game. Paige is a heady point guard with a solid all-around game.
7. Florida
2012 commits (National rank)
PG Braxton Ogbueze (47)
SG Michael Frazier (74)
Continuing the backcourt theme, Billy Donovan also has secured a quality point guard and wing scorer. Ogbueze has a balanced skill package at the point, and Frazier is known for scoring points.
8. Michigan
2012 commits (National rank)
SF Glenn Robinson III (50)
SG Nick Stauskas (89)
John Beilein has a couple talented four-star wings in the recruiting fold. Robinson III, the son of The Big Dog, has blossomed this spring into a terrific prospect. Stauskas is a versatile shooting guard with nice size for his position.
9. Purdue
2012 commits (National rank)
PF Jay Simpson (91)
SG Rapheal Davis (95)
PG Ronnie Johnson (120)
PG Kyle Molock
Simpson provides the size for Matt Painter's class. Davis is a terrific shooter with a solid all-around game as a shooting guard. Johnson is a steady point guard whose stock is on the rise.
10. Texas
2012 commits (National rank)
C Cameron Ridley (12)
As with its close by Big 12 foe Baylor, Texas has one big recruit in its class. Ridley, who has a lot of size and a lot of game, is a post player who can anchor the attack on both ends.
