UTEP defense hoping to turn it around against Tulsa
The 2013 version of the Tulsa Golden Hurricane bears little resemblance to the 2012 squad that won C-USA and the Liberty Bowl. That is of little comfort to coach Sean Kugler and the UTEP Miners.
Both UTEP and Tulsa find themselves at 1-4 at this point in the season, but Kugler knows his sqaud can't overlook anybody.
Tulsa's defense has allowed 36 points per game while scoring an uncharacteristically low 21 per contest. The Miners are averaging a healthy 33 points per game but are giving up nearly 40.
Defensive co-captain Marcus Bagley talked about keeping a positive attitude this week in practice.
The Golden Hurricane offense is hoping the Miners run defense cures what has been ailing them. UTEP is giving up over 255 yards per game on the ground, and Tulsa has a pair of talented backs licking their chops to attack the Miners.
Trey Watts and Ja'Terian Douglas combined for over 2,000 yards on the ground in 2012. Watts is leading the way for Tulsa in 2013. He's coming off a 165 yard, two touchdown performance in a 30-27 overtime loss to Rice last week.
A home win would go a long way to boost morale. Even if the 'Golden Hurricane' has been downgraded to a tropical storm, wins against Tulsa are never easy.
