Miners March on Without Showers
When former Texas A&M quarterback Jameill Showers announced he would be transferring to UTEP this summer, Miners fans couldn't help but look at the Nov. 2nd date in College Station. The transfer would be returning to the place he used to call home.
Showers lost quarterback battles to Ryan Tannehill and Johnny Manziel in successive years. Tannehill went on to be a top ten pick while the legend of 'Johnny Football' is still being written in Aggieland.
A year and a half later, Manziel is in line to capture his second straight Heisman Trophy while Showers has one career win under his belt.
Manzeil is the more talented, accomplished player, but that doesn't diminish the impact Showers had in College Station. Showers is a natural leader who has earned the respect of his former and current teammates.
As fun as it would have been to see Showers return to Kyle Field in the opposing jersey, a separated shoulder against Rice last week will keep Showers out for the rest of the year.
With the reality of the situation having set in, one could hear the grave disappointment in Sean Kugler's voice when announcing Showers would not get to compete against his old mates. Showers was not made available to the media but offered these statements:
"Even though I'm out for this game, I'm still going to be on the sideline doing everything I can to help my teammates."
"The transition from Texas A&M to UTEP has been a good one thanks to my teammates. They made it easier on me because they were welcoming and didn't have any hostility towards me when I first came to UTEP."
Sophomore Blaire Sullivan will get the start against the Aggies. Sullivan went 6/9 for 112 yards and one TD against the Owls. In all honesty, Texas A&M could pick their score against either Showers or Sullivan. UTEP will not be able to go toe to toe with the Aggies depth and talent for four full quarters.
On a positive note, let's hope Aaron Jones can log another stellar performance against the Texas Aggies.
