With relentless vigor, Chad Warner led the Steele Knights' high-octane offense down the field for touchdowns time and again on Friday night.
And as it would turn out, the Knights would need every single one of those touchdowns to win a barn-burner of a game against East Central High. Steele had ten offensive possessions; nine resulted in touchdowns. The tenth possession came after a last-ditch onside kick by ECHS, and featured nothing more than two kneel-downs from Warner to kill the remaining clock as the Knights triumphed 64-59.
“We knew coming in that we were playing a good team," remarked Warner after the game. "Everybody said it was going to be a dogfight. Everybody had to do their job; the offense picked it up. Defense had some slacks, but at the end, we got the victory.”
Star running back Jonathan Hatton, an Oklahoma commit, rushed for nearly 200 yards and three touchdowns before exiting with an ankle injury in the fourth quarter. SMU wide receiver commit Jalen Cooper rushed for a touchdown on an end around. But the Knights' other five offensive touchdowns came courtesy of Warner, who threw for four TD's and added a score on the ground.
